I'm a veteran AutoCAD user. I'm currently learning REVIT from a video tutorial I bought, but there's one small thing that's driving me crazy. How do relative coordinates work on REVIT?When drawing a line on AutoCAD you’d start the command, then click on the first and then type let’s say @5,9 That’d make the second point of that line to be located 5 units to the right on the x-axis and 9 units up on the y-axis from the starting point. How can I accomplish the same basic operation on REVIT?Same thing goes for moving an object. How can I move a column 3 meters to the right and 5 meters up without moving it twice, once in each direction?Please help a newbie!

First, forget everything you learned in CAD. That's an extreme statement but it is almost true. Don't try to use your CAD method or rules in Revit. When placing an element like a wall, or a line in Revit, Revit will automatically show you temporary dimensions. So if you start placing a line, you drag in the direction and angle that you want then just enter the distance. Search you HELP using the term temporary and you can read a lot more on this subject.

Thanks for the quick answer. I do realize cad is very differente from revit, but it seems easier to know the distance in a X-Y axis system rather than calculate the exact distance and angle. What happens when the site you're working on has an angle of 45°33'42"? I get how temporary dimensios work yet moving an object is still easier to do if you know how far to the right-left or up-down you wanna go.

Except for when you have screwball angles, you will learn to love the temporary dimensions. Much easier than it was in CAD. You also have offsets available for some conditions. But back to your screwball angle.... draw the item to length at an angle... click on it and it will give you the angle in a temporary dimension - just clkick on that angle dimension and change it.
