I'm a really new Revit user and I downloaded a fireplace from the Revit 8.1 Library, under Misc. Architectural, the Masonry Chimney-Wall. Try as I might, I cannot make the chimney shorter without running into problems. Can anyone give me insight into how to do this, please? Thanks in advance for any help. I can be emailed at allan@mccomb.com.

have you tried to open the family and edit the fire place? where do you try to shorten the chimney?

Yes, I've tried that. And I've tried in different views. I've also tried properties and even duplicated it to try to change it. Nothing seems to work.

Having just tested it the family needs some work
The brickwork chimney breast is a family type parameter so you can change the height without any problem but then the concrete capping does not follow suit.
The base of the capping is locked in place already so all you have to do within the family is to open up an elevation and add dimension from base of capping to top of capping and lock this dimension. Make sure you select capping and not reference lines.
Now go into family types and change chimney height to something different and the capping will follow.
Just remember, if you want chimneys of differing hts within a single project. Change the family parameters to instance parameters instead of type parameters within the family types box.
Load into project and away you go.

Thanks. That's exactly what happened. Thank you for taking the time to check. I'll try what you suggested.

Well, tried it (I think), and no luck. Here's what I did: highlighted chimney, clicked on edit family, opened chimney for editing, went to back side elevation, added cap dim (made sure I got cap and not reference line) and locked it. Then went back to the house elevation, highlighted chimney once again, clicked on edit box to arrive at the type dialogue box, changed height to 18' (instead of 24', and, once again, the cap got really big. Am I doing something wrong? Thought I understood and followed your excellent directions.

Mage, did you save changes to family and then reload the chimney breast back into your project accepting changes to existing family loaded in ? Sorry to state the obvious but you did not mention these in your last message ?
