As I am starting to work in 2010, for example, I start with selecting a wall...the element properties ribbon should show up at the top of the screen but it does not.  Neither does it happen for anything else (hatching, doors, etc).  How do I change this setting?

This is a new feature in 2011. You now get a pallete like you do in ACAD. Select an element and then look for the properties button in the upper left corner. By default the properties dialog box would display right above the project browser. The properties dialog box would always be open or you have the option to right click, select propeerties the way that you used to. Hopefully this will answer your question.
