i was wondering is it possible to use revit's power to auto-document a detail element? what i'd like to do is create a full model version of a special window awning, at detail level, and then make plan, elevation, section views. i know this is possible as a separate 'projec't, but can such a thing be brought into a normal building project, like a group. i do not want it to be full-on detailed for each instance it is on the building, just once somehow. or should i just draw the detail in 2d and try not to be so wishful?

If it's an awning you will use again I would create it as a family, install it to its own project, create the details then export/import those details into a drafting view in your main project?

As you know you can add detail components to show in section/elevation at various detail levels. Unfortunately dimensioning/text notes cannot be set to be automatically shown at say "fine" detail level. There is no way that i'm aware of having these elements when placed in a detail component or window family show when loaded into a project (unless you start drawing it all as lines). Best bet would be to include the detail components for the geometry, and as for the actual detailing create a group of the same name of the family and keep in a known location. This can be then loaded once the view is created and placed appropriately... Nice idea though and certainly post it as a wishlist item. "The ability to associate pre-detailed views (sections/elevations/plans) with family items, so when they are loaded into the project the new views are automatically created as a 'standard details' set"
