this is quite tricky. Sometimes I can change 2D grid to 3d grid, sometimes I can't. sometimes I can change it back, sometimes I can't. What's best solution to control the grid consistantly in difference scale drawings? shoud I use annotation crop or should I use propagate extents? Help!

When you have an issue where you can't switch between 2D & 3D, check to see if the crop region is on and cropping the grids. By default, when they are cropped they set to 2D...same thing with sections views and detail views.

Thanks! Then what's the best solution to control grids in different scales? In the past when we were in CAD, we use different sets of Grids to do it, now we only have one set of grid. Should we use annotation crop or propagate extents to make all 1/8" drawings use the same grids location, and the 1/16" drawings use another set of grids location?

They scale automatically with the scale of the view, so changing the view scale in the lower left will rescale all of your annotation in relation to the model. If that doesn't satisfy, you can edit the GRID HEAD and LEVEL HEAD families, which are located in your Imperial Library/Annotations. But be careful... you don't want to clutter your library with too much overly-customized annotations.

I don't worry about the scale changes of the Grid bubble but the location. You know, normally you don't turn on the Wall section mark in a 1/16" Plan, but will show them on 1/8" Plan or larger scale. So those wall section marker (and other markers, like the call out)will affect the location of the the grid location. So the location of the grids are not the same in 1/16" drawings and 1/8" drawings.

I recently ran into the same issue. I had not noticed that someone Locked (Pinned) all of the grids. When I UnPinned
the grids I was suddenly able to change the 3D extents. Which is great.
