In Revit Structure 2011 under the "WALLS" category you have the system family: Basic Wall, Curtain Wall & Stacked Wall. Under the Basic Wall system family I created a wall named "Foundation - 16" Concrete" through the usual text book steps. I've done it this way for my previous 2 revit jobs that I have under my belt. This 3rd project which I'm working on (which happens to be the Architect's first project in Revit) I received an email from the Architect saying, "The 16" concrete foundation walls have been categorized as BASIC walls. Can I recategorize the foundation walls as FOUNDATION WALLS instead of BASIC walls?" I believe they are having trouble separating those walls out for editing in Revit Architecture. All the books I've read says I have the ability to edit or create a type of wall under each wall system family but not how to create a new wall system family. Is it possible to create a System Family for the foundation walls or is the Architect missing an editing feature?

I believe all our walls are "basic walls" with the exception of "curtain walls" and "Stacked walls" perhaps there wasn't an issue previously as you were using "structural" walls and maybe this time your did not use the similar discipline? Whatever the cause the Arch should still have the ability to turn on/off elements as needed. The added functionality of filtering linked .rvt files in 2011 makes this so. My recomendation would be to ensure your walls are set to the proper discipline and confirm the Arch is familiar with their settings and filters, especially considering this is their first project. It would be best to nail down these element display issues early on. If you haven't already I would also recommend setting up a meeting with the Arch team (and other disciplines) to cover project setup, element ownership, file sharing, clash detection procedures, and even the basics of modeling if need be. Again being as this is their first project and the structural team is more "revit experienced" you have an opportunity to make a great impression.

System families are system... you can't create a system family, you can only define types. In a default architecture file, if you goto the walls tab under walls or under structure/walls, you can pick the system wall type including a "foundation" wall type. If you look at this type, you will find that this is really a basic wall type that is named foundation and has its function in the type description set to "foundation". It is as siumple as changing your wall type definition setting the proper function.

Gentlemen, Thank you very much for your input. When I created a new wall type under the basic system family I FORGOT to check that "foundation" was set as the function in the type description.
