I use 8.1 and in the midst of one of my average 10 crashes of this *&$#%& program on a brand new workstation, I noticed a link to the Autodesk site for a service pack for revit 8.1 (below). The text seems to imply this will adress crash issues. However, when one cliks the line "Updates and Service Packs->Revit 8.1", nothing happens. I have downloaded the line that says "Updates and Service Packs->Revit 8" and when it runs (with the disk in the CD as req'd) the message appears "the expeced Autodesk product could not be located on your computer".
Has anyone been able to find this service pak for 8.1 and make it work?

Revit comes in builds: the current build is 20050914_0100
Rarely is the CD build ever current for very long and it is always a good idea to check this site if you are experiencing issues to see if you have the latest build:

There is no service pack for Revit 8.1....only for Revit SERIES 8.1 (which comes with AutoCAD). I think you have downloaded the service pack for Series, and thus the install package cannot find your Revit 8.1, because it's looking for series.
Beyond that, I highly doubt your problems are related to Revit software. Your culprit is probably your #@%$% brand new workstation. 99% of the time, crashes in Revit are due to video card driver issues. You need to go to your computer manufacturers's website and download the latest drivers for your video card. If that does bot solve your problem, contact Revit Support right away and they can tell you what driver conflict is causing your crashes.
Another thing to try first: Turn off Hardware Acceleration and Open GL from Settings in Revit, and turn Hardward Acceleration down/off inside the video control panel of your computer.
