I need certain properties of families to display differently once loaded into a project file. For example, I need the perimeter lines of a panel to be "heavier" than the reveals and/or other architectural features of the panel. I have tried changing the panel extrusion properties to something different than the reveals, but because the reveals are in fact void form extrusions penetrating the solid form extrusion of the panel, the properties of the reveals are not editable. Any help/suggestions would certainly be appreciated. Thanks.

The lineweight of a solid will be the same for any edge of that solid and that would include "reveals". In families, you can create sub-categories that can be assigned different lineweights but that will not help you in what you describe. In the model, you can over-ride individual lines in a view (not project-wide) by using the linework tool.

In addition, if you are talking about representation of the object in plan, or elevation views, you can add symbolic lines and turn off the 3D geometry. As WWHub suggested you can create new sub-categories of symbolic lines as well.
