Hi, I'm doing my first project in revit structure and I want to draw a simple roof sheeting over the top of the arch. underlay. I know how to create a roof type and perform the action but for some reason I keep getting this message (see attachment). FYI I have created a level right at the apex of the roof. I also have some steel cols in place. Do I have to create a special ref plane somewhere? I wouldn't have thought so as you can adjust the slope of the roof within the 'roof by footprint' command. I'm in a real bind here as from what I've learned, I need to create this first so I can attach all my steel roof structure to it Thanks in advance.

The dialog box says it all. You need to have the workplane of this view set to be a level or do the command in a different view that has the level as the workplane.

Hi Tom, Problem is is that I've done all that and it still wont work. I can't do it from another view because I need to see the arch. roof plan to draw the boundary. Am I wrong in saying that to draw this roof at the right level I must use the APEX level that I have created? please see attached some more screen shots to show the chronological order I am trying to acheive this. (the level I am chosing is the 'APEX' level. Someone please help, this is driving me bonkers.

You can't create a roof by foot print in a non plan based view. The Revit help file is pretty clear on this topic and it sounds like you need to brush up on the Revit basics via a tutorial or class.

Thanks for the response, but it was a plan based view. I deleted the level and created a new one and then it seemed to work. The only thing I can think of is it might have been a reference view originally and then I made it one through the plan view tab.
