I have a legend of all my casework families and I would like to automatically label them with the Family Type and Name. I created a multi category tag with a label attached to those parameters, but it will not work within a legend, because families within a legend do not schedule? My goal is to manage 100 or so casework families that are in the project and not organized very well.

You can not tag a legend or schedule items. A work around is to have model instaces of these items in a design option and to tag / schedule from there.

Some people do a phase approach creating an 'admin' phase before new construction in your template for doing tagged element views. With both the design option and phase approach you have to be very careful how schedules are set up so things that are not really part of the project don't get counted. Long term Autodesk needs to allow tagging in legends. Without tagging in legend views they are in fact almost worthless to even have in the program. Obviously the Revit programers have never actually had to use Revit to produce CD sets.

I know I said in 2010 that you can't use tags in a legend but you can use material notes (tags).

Yay! Material tags work. They show the "description" field in the material.
