Hi all

I'm now ready to start using phasing but seem to be having some difficulties in understanding a few things.

I have been reading Revit Architecture 2010 'No experience required' and have been following their section on Phasing.

To fill you in briefly I have: -

Gone to phasing tab and created a new phase for 'demolition' so I now have  3 phases, existing, demolition and new construction.

I have duplicated one of my views and renamed it with the name 'existing' included in the new name.

I go into the new duplicated view and then select all by placing a window around everything.

Now I click 'filter' but here is where the problems start:

If I click ok and accept all the categories checked then when I go to the elements properties tab afterwards, there is no option to select which phase I want the view in. Not sure why!

If I follow the book im reading and uncheck all boxes under 'filter', and then just select walls, when I click ok, and then go to element properties to select the phase I want, which in my case is 'existing' I receive an error message that says 'can't keep elements joined'. If i click the option of unjoin elements, I then get a view that is shaded in blue but all the openings for windows and doors etc, are shaded in red. Is this supposed to happen and if not what am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Kirk

Whoooo...haven't read that book but sounds like they are leading you down the wrong path.  As they taught me in school...'paper has never been known to refuse ink'.

I would suggest simply reading the Revit help file as filters are not needed for phasing.

The phasing basics:

1.  Phases can be created and named anything you want.

2.  Demolition is an implied activity between phases and need not be created as a seperate phase.

3.  Views are set to be a specific phase with a 'phase filter' applied to the view.

4.  Phase Filters are defined in a matrix and they can only look backward in time not forward.

5.  Each element in Revit has a phase created and phase demolished property as an instance property.

6.  Objects in the view will respond to the phase filter applied based on what phase they were created and demolished.

7.  Phases can be combined but not re-ordered.

If I can find a write-up I did on them a few years back I will post it.

Hearing what is out there in print makes me want to write the "Revit for the Real World' book that is dancing around in my head.  Since that is years away, I recommend the new book by Phil Read coming out.

Thanks for the reply. I am also reading through the Revit help as well.

Was still hoping to get an answer regarding what I have done so far. Is what I've done completely wrong?

Not sure why I get the error messages and the red shading as shown on the diagram I added.

Thanks

Kirk

Each phase over-ride is assigned a material.  Looks like you have the view set to shaded and a phase filter that is set to show demolition which shows up in red.  Not having the book I can't tell you if what the author says is the correct way to go with phasing.  From your description I'm leaning toward not good advice from them.
