I've been at this for several hours now, so I thought I'd post this up... is there a way to add an edge to the top of a rectangular form? I am able to add profiles to said form (just a rectangular box), and edges to the sides, but Revit will not let me choose the top of the form to, for instance, create a gable roof form. Obviously, Revit can do this. How?

Are you doing mass modeling, in-place family or actual family? Are you in 2010-11 - ? If you are in a project, just create a roof by footprint.

my roof is part of a complex mass for a grad school project. There is no way to add edges the top of a mass object, only the sides?

...wait a second, can what I want to do be done in project mode or do I have to use the conceptual massing environment to do this?

attached is a screenshot from revit of me trying to add an edge to the top of my mass in conceptual massing mode...I just get a circle with a slash through it. Attached is a conceptual model I did in sketchup in 20 minutes - this is what I would like to do in revit, at least the roof shape roughly.

I can't see that in plan view BUT i believe you don't need the "conceptual mass" to create that kind of roof, just use "In-Place" family and use solid "Swept Blend" then you can define the Path and the two profiles (front and back).
