Published date: 2010-Jun-09 ID: TS15255349 Applies to: Autodesk® Revit® Architecture 2011 Autodesk® Revit® MEP 2011Autodesk® Revit® Structure 2011 Issue When you attempt to replace a Revit 2011 material render appearance the application crashes with an Autodesk Revit has stopped working error. Solution The crash is related to the render appearance library previews. The following process should prevent the crash from occuring: - Manage > Materials.
- Render Appearance tab.
- Next to preview image, click on the down arrow icon to display shape options and render quality options.
- Set quality > Rendered – Draft Quality.
- Click OK to close Materials dialog.
- Manage > Materials > Render Appearance tab > Replace…
Revit should not crash after the quality is set > Rendered – Draft Quality. After changing the quality to draft and verifying the render appearance library does not crash, the preview quality can typically be set back to medium or high quality without subsequent crashes.

I had same problem and could not modify materials, it crashed every time I hit ok. This helped:http://revitclinic.typepad.com/my_weblog/rendering/ in my case I had to uninstall the Wacom tablet drivers (solution1)

My problem was solved with a simple issue:
When you're in the 'Render Appearance Tab, make sure you also check the 'Relief Pattern' Box. This will definitely solve the issue. So I say....follow Typhoons same instructions but after setting the quality to 'Draft', make sure to check the 'Relief Pattern Box'.

for your information, it seems this concern is linked to a trouble with wacom pen tablet drivers
you may also disable the driver while using revit, which sometimes solves the problem
