I was always under the impression that the size of the text box is somehow defaulted to fit around the text defined by system parameters.

the attached image might suggest otherwise.  aside from line weight, both highlighted text elements have identical parameters in the "type properties" box. 

 why is one box bigger that the other. 

 each box allows for only line of text.

as Typhoon said what "attached image". we were under the impreession that their was an attached image. there could be many reasons why it is not attached. as for text, when you are starting to place text and just click to define a starting point, not dragging to define a text box, the text box should default to fit around the text entered. is this problem happening when you are placing text?
