I am creating a shipping container office and i have created the shipping containers by massing them. My question is how do i get a pattern of a shipping container or a similar pattern to show up on the mass when i render.

MASS are only used to create a quick "Solar studies" and to apply walls, roofs, floors and curtain system by face... don't use mass to create a "shipping container", create a family to do that.... Here you can see the power of "MASS": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmpZhmxL0FU Enjoy

Apply walls to your masses Create a decal with a jpg of the container sides and ends http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://shaderlab.com/slrl/textures/urban/crates/container_side_white_1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://shaderlab.com/slrl/textures/urban/crates/&usg=__qcBdCornfaIup3yHX8TiziWAw3o=&h=256&w=512&sz=18&hl=en&start=9&sig2=Okl-XXPWrVZb4NHl5R1CfA&itbs=1&tbnid=pr8wOG95SDywwM:&tbnh=66&tbnw=131&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcontainer%2Bside%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1&ei=1AfUS8mQMp7mtQOQmbjnCQ Apply the decal to the wall and stretch to fit.

You can create all different kind of families using the family templates, there are System Families, Standard Families and In-Place families but you CAN'T create SYSTEM FAMILIES... Check in your HELP menu what is SYSTEM FAMILIES and so one... BTW a MASS is a family too.....
