Hi, As you can cut geoemetry with a reference plane within a project I'm wondering if this can be done within a family because I cannot get it to work. What I have is a wooden beam which works fine to cut in a project, but when I load the beam into a new family it does not work to cut with a reference plane. Any ideas if this could be done? Thanks in advance, Christopher

Reference planes can't cut anything but you can limit geometry to reference planes. Download the families guide and it will show you how to do what you want. You can find this under your HELP pulldown. In that guide, pay attention to the advanced standard component families - nesting sill families into the window family. This should be a similar application to what you are doing.
