hey guys...haven't been able to find much of any help searching through here... i'm creating a music museum in revit and my concept for the facade involved having part of it be video screens (almost like a ticker that you'd see in NY). I realize that have a video projection in revit is most likely way more work than i can handle but i thought that if i could use photos on it that would "simulate" a video screen My only idea was that i could just use a curtain panel system (which the rest of the facade is going to be anyways) and try and overlay a photo on it. the only problem i think i could have with this is that i wouldn't want each panel to have the same picture (unless i guess i could use one big photo and one big panel) After trying i'm not sure if/how thats possible. My last resort will be using photoshop after to blend an image over it but i know that this will be a pain to try and match a rendered revit view. an example of what i'm going for can be seen in the LEHMAN BROTHERS BUILDING in NY http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/00997/barclays1_997895i.jpg any help would be great, i have moderate understanding of creating/editing families as far as the curtain system goes. thanks, Kyle

Use "DECAL" with the photos you want in those panels...

Be aware that decals only show in rendered views.

Search in your HELP for DECAL, you have all information in there... is the best tutorial.

well i did a couple quick test renderings and it works great for day time stuff but i'm curious as to how you can get an image to show up at night? (as if it were a tv screen so no light shining on it). i've been messing with the settings, mostly using the lcd/led options but i can not get either of those to even show the picture in a night view, it doesn't even give off light to the wall or ground near it. anything obvious i'm doing wrong here?

Did you place it on glass and have a strong light behind it? Glass has to be transparent enough.

no i did not, i may have miss understood how the attributes work...so if i wanted the effect of a video screen on the outside of my building i'll have to place it on glass then light it? i'll mess with that i guess...let me know what you think

Well the light has to come from somewhere and you said it would be a night view. Think about it, a poster doesn't give off any light....

i under stand the light has to come from somewhere, what i missunderstood was how the revit help menu defines the Luminance attribute as the light EMITTED by the surface...i interpreted this as its own light source

k so i've been messing with this for a couple hours now working with lighting and what not but nothing i do will allow me to end up with a normal colorful product for a night rendering. i have multiple decals on glass and cmu, i can get it to see the image but its black and white, almost like its to bright but when i try lowering certain levels it doesn't help...any ideas? heres a couple examples of what i'm getting: one with interior light only, one with interior and an exterior spot light the farthest left decal is on glass, the other on cmu, and there is a light source behind the one on glass.

well i've pretty much exhausted all of my revit knowledge over the past couple weeks...so if anyone has any ideas/ways to make a decal like the ones i previously attached look like a tv screen for the outside of the building...it would be such a big bonus to have a exterior night rendering showing the designed video facade panels

Right now, you have the light emitting from the object that the decal is placed upon..? This just sounds bizarre, and I'm quite surprised that any image is showing at all. If I were in your shoes, I would make a new family of light source. In lighting families, the light source isn't actually an object--it's an emphemeral shape you add, which has a direction it's pointing. When you model the bulb, you have a "light-emitting" material, which at best defies shadows, but doesn't illuminate anything but itself. So, to get to the point, what I would do is create a wall-based light fixture family with a rectangular inward-facing light source the size of your screen, and place this light source an inch or two from your decal. your light fixture doesn't need any physical parts, not even a plane of glass--though by default light sources aren't visibile in VG, so you'd have to turn that on to see/manipulate it in your model. In properties I toned down the intensity of the light too. out of curiosity I modeled this. It seems to work. Here's the screenshot of it rendered and in shaded view. this is 2010, but I don't think they've made changes in this department.

that is definately something i will have to check out...i have a couple questions tho. out of curiosity what settings did you have for the decal? (luminance, reflectivity..etc) and could i change the beam of the light source so that there would be virtually no focal point? thank you very much for your advice so far
