I use Revit 2010 and I am running into an issue with legends. Working in residential architecture, the windows on the front elevation will have different grids than the windows on the sides or the rear elevation. Our window families are constructed so that grids are a nested family that is driven by the visibility parameters in the model. We also use a shutters as a nested family. Is there a way to create a true representation of the window elevation in the legend? Or, if I have a window with 2/2 grids and shutters in the model, can I show a window in the legend with these properties? It seems like with windows and doors, there is no way to control this through the legend. One solution we've come up with is to use the bare-bones elevation of the window to illustrate the size, and then include all of the visibility parameters in the schedule.

Surely you have your windows as different types? I'm not seeing the problem here. When you insert a legend component, you have the ability to add any type of window or door that is loaded in the project.

Yes - we have our windows coming in as different types, but the type only determines the size of the window, not grid placement or trim features. Those features are all driven by instance parameters. Because they are instance parameters, when we insert the window as a legend component, we cannot turn the parameters on and off.

The problem is that you made these instance parameters rather than type. We usually set most of our window elements as type parameters because if, for say, we have a different grid of muntins on a window. then it will have a different designation in the schedule. If I were you, and don't mind spending some time correcting this, I would change these to type parameters so that they can be accurately represented in the window legend. It will take some time know to fix everything, but it's a lot better than not having all of your elements in the legend linked to the actual elements in the building.
