In my current project there's a concrete slab (floor) with steel I beams (beam family) partially encased in it. I'm having problems with the section view, because the encased part of the beam is shown in the floor material's color and only the outline and cut pattern of the beam material are visible. Is there any way to get the beam material's color to show instead of the floor's color? Or to put it in more general terms: is there a way to get a certain material to show on top with both color and cut pattern in a section view in a situation that involves intersecting objects? Can I edit the geometry? Cut the floor somehow? I know I can do an in-place family, and I would have, but I thought there should be an easy fix for this, 'cause it's a pretty common situation. My first thought was to edit the geometry, but you can't select beams with the join tool, and you can't pick which object cuts the other anyway...

They're not joined, because the join tool doesn't select beam families... Or maybe this particular family only. I'm gonna look for other beam families, maybe they can be joined.
