Hi - After experiencing the pain of importing CAD files for details, we have been making the effort to draw all our details in Revit and start using the key noting features. (yay!) We typically draw wall sections at 3/4" with section details at 1 1/2" or 3". To avoid duplicating drawing efforts, we have been grouping the wall sections that have section blowups as detail groups. Most of the time this works pretty well - the wall section updates and so does the section detail. However, occassionally when finishing editing a group there will be an message that the group has "inconsistent types"; this error message forces the user to create multiple groups or to explode the group or to exclude the "inconsistent object" from the group. This seems to be very unpredictable, as the error might boot out one detail component that is a piece of gyp board but leave all the other pieces of gyp in the group. We only include detail components, drafted lines or filled regions in the detail group; so I'm not sure what the issue might be. Any advice as to working with detail groups? Or better ways to draw section blow-ups? Thanks!

Are you doing your wall sections as drafting details rather than model sections? That would be defeating the power of Revit. If you are using model sections, that would explain your problem. If the goup is defined within a model view, it may associate with model elements, then when those are not there in another view, Revit has problems. You say the wall section updates and so does the section detail.....trying to understand... you use the group for just this reason - wall section to detail? Why not just copy / paste same place instead of the group?

Hi - we draw the wall sections using a model section. To get the right detail for things like brick joints or window frames, we bring in detail components, or might use detail lines to represent flashing. The only reason we group the drafted lines, filled regions and detail components is so that if the section changes, then the section detail will also update without someone having to recopy the elements and keynotes from wall section to the section detail. Does that make sense?

OK - so if this is a one only use group from section to detail of the same are, there should be no problems at all. Edit the group in the detail and it will be updated in the section. But if you are trying to place this same group in a different location, this is where you may have problems because of Revit's associations - especially with something like keynotes.

Ok, that makes a lot of sense. I think the groups have gotten screwy when they are placed in two similar views - like two wall sections along the same wall with the same parapet cap detail. So I guess this means we will need to copy/paste when there are similar changes being made to wall section. Thanks!
