Hello.... I'm trying to layout an auditorium seating in multiple "arc" layout. I was able to do this by loading the 3d cad file that I imported in "furniture" family - then I did a an array of this family in the project. I was able to do it with no problem......BUT! everything are now slow. looks the size of the project increased dramatically. My question now is that... do you use furniture family for this type of situation or line based? I want the spacing of the seat to be the same. I guess i need to create a parameter for this but just not sure which is family based to use. Thanks in adavance. See the rendered image.

This is a tough one to handle, but here are some thoughts. Doing the direct import of the 3D CAD file into the furniture family will result in a heavy Revit family. The array of the family in the project will compund the problem as you found out. If you need the seats purely for visualization, can they be done in a separate Revit file and linked in to the main model? If you need to count them can they be done as a 2D family and created as "shared" and nested into another family with an array parameter? It may even be that you have one 2D family in the main model for layout and counting, and copy past those 2D families into a seperate project and swap out for a 3D version to be linked back in for visualization. Other may have some ideas as well.

In the family, did you set all the 3D elements to only show in 3D and add symbollic linework for 2D plans? I know this will not help with elevations and sections but do these really need to show in those views?

It's purely for visualization only. I guess the linking of the seating layouts to the project will improve the speed. but i was hoping you can do all this in the project without lagging. I was thinking if you can do an array group in the family with fixed spacing parameter (seat spacing) and radius path parameter (obviously, the radius path change as the seating aisle goes up/down). Can line based family do this? Thanks!

The line based family can only do straight lines as I recall. If it is for vizualization only how about creating an RPC family? Another option to consider is doing the seats as a ballister and using them inside a railing family. The railings can handle equal spacings and curves.

I might try that option some other time. This particular Architect wants me to use the 3D file he sent me. I'm still playing around with the line based family... I think you can use arc lines. Thanks
