i have a structure with cast in place conrete walls surrounding it. im trying to paint those walls but when i chose the paint tool and my material i cant figure out where to change the color from black to white. how do i do that?

When you choose the Paint tool look at the status bar in the bottom left for directions. Ususually you pick the edge of your wall or structure. It will highlight>click on it>you should have chosen the material you want from the top left. If you want to divide areas, use the Split Face tool to make several regions to apply material to.

Hey I generally have the same problem. If you cannot figure your material out just quickly go to (manage) then (materials) to find out which material you need and reselect the paint tool. Its a pain but thats what I do.
