I've read a bunch of posts on here saying that the only way to do a 3d sweep is by picking the edges of a mass. These posts were 2 years ago. I'm on Revit Architecture 2010. Have they made 3D sweeping any easier yet??? Revit is by far the most arduous modelling software I have ever worked with. The last thing I want to do is spend 4 hours trying to model a grab bar with a 45 degree angle. With any other program I've used, it could be done in 5 minutes flat.

Obviously, a grab bar would be done in a family and you don't need a mass to do it... I can do that family in less tha 5 minutes...

Can you explain how to model an angled grab bar as a family without a mass... in less that 5 minutes? Maybe my criticism of Revit's modelling capabilities was misplaced.

Thanks Typhoon, That was a good tutorial. However, the problem I'm having is how to create a sweep that follows a 3D path (as you demonstrated, a 2D sweep can be done very quickly)... As far as I know, the only way to do a 3D sweep path by using mass edges, which can take a LONG time for a complicated form. The attached image is the family that I ended up modelling. I did it in 3 parts, it took me much longer than 5 minutes. Maybe I'm going about things the wrong way, but Revit seems pretty arduous for modelling complex shapes. That being said, I've only ever used Rhino3D & Sketchup - both of which make complex modelling fast & easy... and cheap.

by 2d sweep, I mean: a sweep that follows a 2D path. Sorry.

Attached is a furniture family with a "3D" sweep and I did not use a mass. Perhaps you can learn from that if you edit the sweep.

If you post that image before you save me the time of the first video, here you have in 3 min and 15 seconds, BTW, I worked in Rhino and Max too, they are very good softwares BUT they aren't PARAMETRIC.... http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1UP83MN7

Here you have another video using "a sweep that follows a 2D path" like you said: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P5UQ66IG

"Attached is a furniture family with a "3D" sweep and I did not use a mass. Perhaps you can learn from that if you edit the sweep." Thanks WWHub This is exactly what I'm trying to do... However, when I click edit sketch, it says "Modify Picked Path > Sweep > Pick Path". This tells me that the path was done by picking the edges of a mass, but if you could teach me how you drew that without one, I would be very happy. Someone in another thread said that this couldn't be done, if I remember correctly.

These are good tutorials. You have a good handle on this stuff.

I did not use a mass but it was several years ago. Pre 2009, if you had edited this file, it would not just say modify path and we had line tools to add to the path. Ty's second video is very close to what I must have done then and that is a very good process. Just remember that as Ty shows near the end, you can rotate lines from a plane while being in another view not parallel with that plane. You can also copy and move lines from the plane they were created on while working in a view not normal to that original plane..
