In Revit 2009, I'm trying to scale down the appearance of the Room Label, typically 1/8" to 3/32". I was able to access and edit the text size in the Room Tag family, but I can't figure out how to change the appearance of the Room Number box. So now I have all of my text at the appropriate scale, but the Room Number box is still huge. Where is this box located and how can I edit it? It does not show up in the Room Tag family. I have a feeling that it may in fact be part of the Room space family, but that is considered a system family, which to my understanding is impossible to edit.

you will most lkely need to goto your visual graphics in the family to turn the lines on around the number. once you have done that just move the lines to where they look better.

Sounds like it would be a simple solution, but I believe everything is already turned on. I checked visibility overrides and checked everything on. I noticed that when I cleared the tag of every possible definition, the box still remained, which leads me to believe that it must be part of the room family. So I guess the real question is how do you edit a system family?

"So I guess the real question is how do you edit a system family?" - pick in the thag room, go to the options bar and you have a button with "Edit Family" - then change what you want and save then "Load into project".

To my knowledge, you can't edit a Room because it is a System Family as opposed to a regular Family. That's why I'm asking if anybody knows a way around.

Your original question was abot room labels and your last post you talk about rooms. These are two different things. Rooms are system level but labels are families the user can edit. Aleen gave you the correct answer but you have to edit the label in the family, not in the project. Click on any room label and choose edit the family. Then follow what Allen told you. In the family, VG, turn on everything under both tabs... and make sure the checkbox to show those elements is checked.

I'm talking about both Rooms and Room Labels because they appear to be intertwined in this particular situation. Let me restate: ROOM LABEL PROBLEM: I can only edit size of text, not the box because it does not display. I turned everything on in the family editor for Roomtag.rfa. Yes, I used VG and yes I turned on every checkbox in every tab. ROOM PROBLEM: I believe that the "box" in question is actually tied to the Room itself and somehow connects to the room label at the time the label is placed. This is how Revit knows to attach the label to the room in the first place. I verified this when I deleted every possible aspect of the room label including text, data, etc. and then reloaded it to project. When I returned to the room, the box was still there. So my second question is how do you edit the room which happens to be a sacred "System Family" member? The canned answers don't work in this instance. Try it! Look for the box in the family editor of Roomtag.rfa and I guarantee you will not find it.

Revit will show your room at the limits of the room with an X. If your room is not properly enclosed, Revit will show just a square with an X, perhaps this is what you are talking about. Revit will place the room tag at the center of the X. You can move that center at any time and you can move the tag anywhere after it is initially placed. If you move the tag outside the room and enable the leader, the leader will go from the tag to the center of the X. Now, if you are really taliking about the tag, then I can assure you that the box for the tag (if it has one) is defined in the family editor. I'm sorry that I do not have Revit here to add a screen shot. If your tag has a box and you can not see it in the family editor, then you have not turned it on in VG !!!

I checked VG again and noticed that Automatic Sketch Dimensions was turned off under Dimensions in Annotation Categories. I was unable to check it because it was grayed out. However, when I checked the option for "Show annotation categories in this view" I was able to check it back on. Then finally, I was able to see and edit the missing box. I had missed it the first few times because it was hiding under the closed plus sign under Dimensions.
