This may be a stupid question but I haven't run across the answer. When I select an existing beam or joist is there a way or what is the best way to determine which side is the start and which side is the end. I have been using trial and error to determine my offsets. If there isn't a way, in my best Chris Berman voice "CMON MAN!"

The best solution I have used it to nest symbolic elements into the framing families. Color coded symbolic lines appear to be the best solution. I.E. green for start, red for end. This method will work for steel beams using the project symbolic representation also, as it will place the colored lines on top of the default linework. Attached is an example of steel framing with this applied.

That's good tip. How did you go about modifying the W-Flange family? Did you create new object styles for start and end? Did you draw them on the reference level plane or on top of the beam (sweep)? Also, do these line print? Thanks-

You can add control arrows to framing families...a much better solution... watch video... http://www.screencast.com/users/MOwens/folders/Jing/media/fef9a82b-c3e9-4174-9660-4bb8a2f84b03

I gave that a try and it does work and it is simple...but the one glitch in the matrix I found was when you altered the elevation of one of the ends of the beam...when you selected the beam, the control arrow will not appear after that. Does anyone else experience this? Is there a way around it? Thanks!

experiencing the same... perhaps a color-coded system will work for that...

The color coded method will work for sloping members.
