I am wondering if there are any routes I can explore to find out what BIM models, 4D and 5D information cost. It is new to a lot of people and I think they are baffled on what to charge for someone needing a 3D model for other firms to use. In a nutshell where I work, we survey the as-built building to create a 3D model for other firms to use the model for whatever it is they are going to use it for. Sometimes we get stumped and severely under price a model because no one knows what the industry standard is for 3D modeling or BIM. I just need a direction in searching or anyone know of someone who does pricing for things like that so I can educate myself and in turn them.

you need to check out the AIA BIM Protocal E202 document, Level of Development. though they don't talk dollars i would imagine you have to consider this info when doing pricing. there are five levels of model development and it talks about what each level should be suitable for.

Thanks. I did not know that this topic would be so elusive. I was just trying to figure out what was an industry standard would be for 3D work. With them not knowing, we modeled a 105,000 sq ft high school of of drawings from 1926, not including the 3 renovations since 1926 for 7,000 dollars. Obvioulsy it was way under priced and not enough time to do the model.

i guess that's were the level of development comes into play. if it were just massing then i think $7,000 would be more than enough.

If you monitored your time and the level of detail you achieved let us know, $0.50 per square foot, using an existing plan, is what I charge for residential projects sometimes that is not enough, but it gets me thinking of how complex the building is. Most of my residential remodeling stuff is 3000 sf. My guess is that you should have charged in the neighborhood of $0.25, per square foot. Please post the time you spent and the rate you usually charge it would be very interesting.
