I have a typical detail drawn up in a drafting view. I want to make that detail into a family so i can bring it into any future job. When i save it as a family, all the text goes away. Is there a way to keep the text on there after saving it as a family.

If you have done a detail in a drafting view, the best way in my opinion is to group it and save it out as a group (.rvg). You can then insert the group into future projects, or include it in your template file so it is always there.

Another way would be to do your typical details as a detail component family. Then you can save a library of typical details and then they can be placed in mutiple projects or view if you need that. You can copy clip from the drafting view to the detail compontent family and it will do text!

I have not been able to copy clip.
I select my detail in the drafting view, then i copy it.
When I go to paste it to the detail component family template, it says that you can not paste to a family from a project. Am i doing something wrong?
thanks

Is there more than just detail lines and text in your detail? When I have done it in the past all I had was those things. I checked it out and you cannot copy clip detail components, you can do text, detail lines, filled regions. You will have to replace the detail component by loading them. It might be worth it to be able to use it in multiple projects.

I am able to make a family out of my detail and everything shows up fine, but when i go to load it into my project, the text and dimensions disappear. I just dont understand. Details are killing me right now.

Ok I guess I opened my big mouth too soon. I read on another post that this is what some people were tring and did not fully test it out for myself. I am sorry I should know better. We have done some details but we never put text in them until we loaded them into our file so I never tested that theory fully. I notice you can't even do text with leaders in the family either so that sucks.
We tried to group and save out a detail but we did not like this because you don't get to preview the file. so we have a regular project file called "window details' and the only thing in the file is drafting views that have details we can copy and paste them from project to project. I KNOW you can do this and it copies the whole detail text, detail components and all. I should have just said this from the start but we liked the detail component idea. now we know that won't workl. Forgive me.
