I work for a PEX manufacture and I am heading up the project of creating content for our various fitting; tees, manifolds, multi-port tees, stop valves and etc.  As of now I have our ProPEX Ring created and a tee.  I have a lookup table created for both and they both work.  I have specific parameters set to be shared so that when running a bill of materials for a plumbing design my parameters will show up.  They’re also shared so that I can nest, for example my ProPEX Ring family into my ProPEX EP Tee family, and still have the ProPEX Ring family display part numbers, price and descriptions in my B.O.M. or ‘schedule’.  The schedule is working for the most part, but I’m running into a small issue with grouping.

When I load the tee family into a generic project and run a schedule for pipe fittings, it breaks my ‘Part Description’ parameter for my ProPEX Ring into a separate column from the ‘Part Description’ parameter for my ProPEX EP Tee.  i.e.  So along the top header for the schedule it would go something like: Quantity, Part Description, Part Description, Part Number, Part Number, Cost, URL and etc. depending on what parameters I’d like to show at a given time in the schedule.  Only does it for the parameters I created, doesn’t seem to affect the default parameters like cost and URL.

My second problem, which would be AWESOME if I could get it to work...  I have my ProPEX Ring nested in my ProPEX EP Tee family.  There are three of the rings in the tee family, one for each of the three ports on the tee.  The tee is a straight tee, so none of the ports differ in size from another so none of the rings will differ in size from the tee, ½” tee – ½” ring, 2” tee – 2” ring.  That’s where I’m running into an issue, I can draw it and it looks great but it doesn’t work.  I can load the tee family into a project and adjust the size of the tee and the tee body will adjust according to the size I select in the options bar.  However, when I change the tee size from, say, a ½” tee to a 1” or even a 1-1/2” tee, my rings stay at a ½” while the tee body updates in size.  I’ve tried every which way I can think of to add a parameter to the nested ring so it’s size is linked to the tee body size but the only parameter you’re allowed to add on a nested family is a family type: pipe fitting with a  common discipline.

If you select the nested family, and have placed a parameter, like ring radius, and you go to the element properties and edit the type there should be a small box on the parameter line to the right.  If you click that box you can assign that radius parameter to the tee radius parameter so it will flex when you change the size of the tee.

Revit was once a 5 letter swear word for me....

Matt,

Thank you very much for posting.  But, No go....It did give me a few Ideas to tryout, but nothing....

P.S.  One thing I noticed about the *.zip I posted with the families.  The Tee family in the folder, the ring I have set to a 3/8" ring and the tee family starts out at 1/2"....my company does not offer a 3/8" tee.  just an FYI for anyone.

Again, thank you, Matt, for your post!
