I have some framing on a coarse detail plan that I would prefer to show up in fine detail. But I can't find any way to override those elements. It would be a great addition to the "Override by Element" tool. Anybody know how I can accomplish this? Thanks

If you create a filter for the objects you can then go into V/G, filters tab, and override the detail level there. And yes, it would be great if it was part of the Override By Element tool.

Is this a 2010 thing? Over-riding detail level through filters? Don't have 2010 just yet...waiting...still waiting...waiting still (our BIM leadership is a bit slow)

Have you tried looking in the visibility/graphics of the view? There is an option there to set detail levels for individual elements....in 2009 and 2010 all flavors.

i havent tried it yet, been very busy lately. but i looked quickly and it looks like the override would be by catergory, not element, in visibility graphics.

TKennedy,
Above you mentioned being able to go into VG - Filters Tab and change the detail level there. I just created a filter so I could do just what you're describing and I see every other option but "Detail Level". It isn't there. Am I missing something? I am using RST 2011, thanks!

You can't control visual fidelity via a filter, you can halftone, change patterns/colors of lines and surfaces, and control whether or not an object is displayed, but no ability to control whether it shows in medium, fine or coarse.
Your best bet is to use visibility graphics overrides find the category of your object, then over on the far right you will see the ability to change it to fine (should be by view as default value). Once this is done, you can create a view template from this view to quickly apply to other similar views.

VG, is the best place to control categories... but if there's only one type of chair which you really want to see in detail, for example, but not the other furniture, it might even be worth going to the family and changing how it displays at different detail levels and types of views...
