Hi. I have created several families that i would to be able to automatically cut into the slabs that they will be attached to. (see attached image). I have two issues here. Firstly is it possible to create columns using the structural column template that will cut the slab or will i need to use the generic model floor based template and include a void into the family. Secondly I used the generic face based template to create this steel column connector so that it will cut a 10mm deep recess into the host slab. Now the question is how can i make this family cut a recess into two adjacent slabs. Am i using the wrong template. is there another way to cut the slabs in a way that the cut will be constrained to the position of the columns. To complicate things even further. It would be ideal for me to include the columns and column tie within a group but excluding the slab from the group. I would still like the voids/cuts to the slab to be parametrically constrained in some way to the grouped elements.

1st... In order to cut the floor, the family has to be hosted in some way. You don't want your columns to be floor or face based. 2nd ... If the floors are joined, the generic with void might cut both slabs. You have a unique situation here. You may have to do an in-place family... type floor - that is a void and you then select both slabs to cut them. Why do you want to group - don't understand.

wwhub is correct the floors need to be joined, but it is a little bit more complicated, you have to join your floors before you place in your family, you alos need to place it on the join. once in plce you can unjoin the floors if you like and it will all work corectly.
