I am new to Revit, but always thought dimensions were view specific. I have downloaded some window families from the Autodesk page to modify and noticed that when I click a dimension string on the exterior view it highlights on the interior view and if I erase in one view, it erases on the other, like I am looking at either a single dimension string in two different views or somehow they are connected. How is this done? I would actually like to do dimensions this way if possible when building or editing families. Suggestions are appreciated.

Yes, that is correct. This is the library link I use for Revit 2009. If you select and open any window family, you will see that if you select a dimension string, lets say on the exterior view, it will highlight on the interior view, and if you erase the dimension string on one view it will delete on the other, basically like it is one dimension string. Nobody has been able to explain this to me, any help is appreciated. http://revit.autodesk.com/library/archive2009/html/index.html

Ok this is weird, something is wrong, all dimension should be independent of a view. What do you mean when you say that if you select it in the exterior view it will highlight it on the interior view?? Does this mean you have both windows open?? Have you tried hitting "TAB" when you select the dimension ref? When you hit tab in the lower left hand corner it will tell you what you are selecting to dimension.

I would say that this is "normal" behavior. I'm guessing the only dimensions that are having this "issue" are dimensions w/ labels applied? I would imagine that unlabeled are view specific, but once you apply a label it becomes, if we will, project specific. This allows you to see what dimensions are parameterized from corresponding views. With out this feature it would be very easy to over constrain your family. HTH

Actually I have both windows open, the exterior view and the interior view. I understand that when there is a label associated with the string it behaves this way, but the weird thing here is that there are non labeled strings in these families, in theory regular dimension strings, behaving this way too. If I move/erase/select the dimension string it will do this on both views accordingly just like if it had a label associated with it.

What window family specifically are you looking at? I have looked at a couple on there that do not have this behavior with unconstrained dimensions. Not saying that I don't believe you, just trying to see what you are seeing.

Thanks for your help. This is the one I was using. If you pull say the EQ dimensions or some of the dimensions around the trims which are not labeled you will see how the are behaving. Make sure you have both the exterior view and the interior view open.
