Hi there. I have created a family into which I have loaded another family of a structural steel column. How is it possible to read the value of the parameter of the merged family ( that is the depth of the column), and place it to a new parameter in my main family?

The host family can drive the nested family but the nested can not drive the host. You can read all about nested families in your HELP.

Basically, you have to create parameters in your host family ("column height" for example). Then go into the properties of your nested family and link the nested parameters with the parameters of the host family. There should be some good videos on the specifics of nested families. I suggest you get a good handle of the nested families because they are very useful. Mike
