When finishing up a sketch for a pad, I get the error msg: "pads can't overlap (but can share edges)". How can I get the pads to share edges?. I have resorted to pulling the edges apart, but that allows an unsightly slice toposurface to rise between the pads.

Yeah the site tools are a bit bodgy this way.
Have you tried editing the existing pad and copying the line you wish to share an edge to the clipboard and then pasting that into the other pad sketch... I have experienced this once before.
