Hello There.

I am trying to do interior renderings In Revit 2010 using the built in Mental Ray and it is not as good as i thought. I am having trouble with the lighting. it is shadowing funny and the light are leaving rings on the ceiling. Also sun coming throught the window is acting like a spot light.  I would like render interiors with just natural light and the renderings com out reall dark. I look at my house and mid day you do not need light on so see you kitchen. Is there any trick to the lighting to work real nice or natural light. There are some real nice ones in the gallery how can i get min to do that.

 Any help would be great.

Andrew

Any time you do an interior rendering you need to increase the wattage or/lumens intensity to a 10:1 ratio. (i.e.... 100watts = 1,000watts, etc...)

"I would like render interiors with just natural light and the renderings com out reall dark." Go to Adjust Exposure and decrease the exposure value until you are satisfied.....

It's a bit like photography.  If you take a photo, it's rarely exactly as you see it.  It depends on the exposure that is set and if the interior is just natural light you will usually need a flash (artificial light).  It's a matter of playing with the settings, quality, lighting to get the effect that you require.  I don't think that the first attempt is likely to be successful.  To get good renders takes quite a lot of trial and error using draft settings to see what is happening with the lighting before you do the high quality renderings.

google the words "mental ray exposure", there is a lot of sites that explain what are you asking.

other thing: go to the artificial lights family and check what kind of ies ( shape of the lightining), there is a lot of types on the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\program data\Autodesk\RAC 2009\IES, search for an ies viewer too, it let you choose more acurately the ligthining.

Thanks for the tips. I was working on it and is there anywhere to get a good selection of lights that work well. I am just having a time of it the way some shadow work and getting the lighting to do waht i want it to. I will keep playing with it. any other tips if you think of them let me know.

I will have to attach an image and see if anyone could give pointers to the lighting.  I have it at home.

Have a great day

How about now, 2011, I download an IES file for my light fixture, then put it in my family, render it, and I have light coming out the side of my light.  I've adjusted thru full 360° spectrum on the tilt parameter.  If my image was attached properly, you should see the issue.  I'll keep searching thru other threads, but this one was fairly close to my issue.  Also of note, I've moved the light source higher, lower, etc. without much change, darn thing still shines thru the fixture itself.

Thanks,

image i think you have an ies similar to the number 26 or 27 , BUT its pointing to the side. Try to rotating it manually on an elevation
