You don't give enough information to really answer.  What is the size of the family?  What is your system?

Sounds like memory issues to me.

I am using a pentium 4 with 2.25 GB of ram and windows xp proffessional. I can add components from revit library ok but when I dadd components that have been downloaded into the library from revit city most of the times my revit arch 2009 stops running closes and save the file into a recovery file. There are times when I do not have a problem but it is rare.

I try to open the family to view it by itself no file open and I get "An urecovable error has occurred. The program will now be terminated. All your data has been recently saved, so there is no need to cretae a recovery file." The file is 108 kb.

Uou do have memory issues ... recommended minimum is 4 GB...

Clean your system.  Run cc-cleaner or someting similar.

I have downloaded bim objects as a single file download and it works fine with revit. The problem starts when I group several objects to download and they download in a zip file. When I unzip the file then apparantly it corrupts itself. creating the error in my program.
