I have a wall that is part of a soffit, I want that wall to attach to the sloped roof and the ceiling that makes up the bottom of the soffit. I get the error that it cant be done because either the top is below the bottom of vice versa. Can this be done?

Check on the options bar when you click attach - there is an option for attach top or base.

I can't quite picture this scenerio without a screen capture but either way don't forget about using the 'edit profile' option of a wall to fine tune the top, bottom or start and end of a wall.
