So I have a GFI outlet and have added a label for the voltage text. We want to be able to place this into a plan then be able to add the voltage text if necessary. Is this even possible? Maybe I'm going about this idea all wrong. Either way, any help will be appreciated. I don't want to have to make a new type for every voltage we may use in the future. Thanks for your help in advance, Kris Ashley

If you set the nested family to shared, you can pass the information to it through the host family. Read this Linking Family Parameters in your H E L P.

I have tried that and got the following error message: "While loading family 'Outlet Annotation-Label_rotatable': Shared annotations cannot be used in 3d model families." I need the 3d aspect of this family so that it will attach to walls and rotate as needed as well as to show the plates in elevation. Any ideas? Thanks!

In the parameter properties dialogue box under "parameter type" both choices (family parameter and shared parameter) are grayed out, I can not choose either. When I attempted to make a new label, the box was the same.

Oops - deleted my own post where I said: Sorry, the nested family does not have to be shared but the parameter that you change has to be shared. .... In what family do you have problems. Take a look at the stock family in the electrical library - switch-double. It has a nested annotation family and passes the parameter through the host.

Yes, but once you place it on the plan you can not alter the (2) and change it to, say, a (3). I have taken the GFI outlet that comes with Revit. I opened that family, then the one within that. I added a label above it, added and adjusted parameters so that the voltage text (new label) could be turned on and off at will in the plan. I loaded it into the GFI Outlet family then into the project floor plan. It comes in, I can turn on/off the voltage text (new label), but I can not edit it, here in plan. I hope that makes a bit more sense! I should have been more clear from the begining. Did that answer your question properly?

In that switch family, the 2 is a type label and you can change it in the project. If you edit that family, you can change that label in the host to be an instance based family and that works as well.
