I am using Architecture 2009. I am working on some elevations which vary in depth of view and I would like to show hatch patterns on surfaces in the foreplane of the elevation and hide hatch patterns in the distance. Is there a way to make this change without having to draw a number of masking regions?

Not really. The view depths of elevations are either on, off, over-ridden or else annotated/modified. If, let's say, you had a section cut that viewed the space beyond, it would be easy to set the cut to show hatch the the surfaces beyond not to.Can someone either support or correct this point-o-view?? <qab> ^_^

I'm a little confused by your response but that might be because I am not that familiar with Revit. Are you saying that there is property to the view depth box which would allow me to define the visibility of the hatches? I looked into this and nothing jumped out as obvious. Essentially I want to have some hatches show and other hatches hidden and I am looking for a quick way to do this. (I have already used masked areas to hide the hatches I don't want but for future reference I am wondering if there is a more correct way to do this)

okay... sorry for any confusion... if you know about your Visibility Graphics settings, then you would know that you can change a myriad of visual settings.in an elevation, all your visuals are TYPICALLY looking at the faces... so regardless of how close they are, they are either on or off... ONE way. i was trying to further expound on this by explaining that MOST of the time, the components in a view like a section cut are show TWO ways: a surface pattern and then a cut pattern. in short, i think you might be a little out of luck. i was hoping that maybe we can solve this not the EXACT way that your are thinking, but maybe a different way.... for instance, whenever i need greater attention to the "foreground" or other crucial information, i use a TRANSPARENT REGION (hatch pattern) that goes over less important things.... the benefit of this is that i can loosely place it over things rather EXACTLY placing a mask over the right things so as not to obscure the wrong thing. as wwhub would say, you may have to "think out of the box" on this one.... anyone else like to dive in on this??

Ahh, ok, got it this time. Ok, I was just wondering if there was some wonderful pre-set function to do that whole process rather than the more manual labor approach I had been taking. Thanks!

Okay, assuming that was not an unintentional repost..... you need to read your help files till you understand what I'm saying. You need to have a better understanding about Visibility Graphics and how it relates to cuts and surfaces. A surface pattern is a surface pattern... forget I said ANYTHING about depths. Please figure out how these work because in Revit, it makes a difference, especially if your playing with VG and filters.

LOL.... You and I are posting at the same time!! >_< We might as well be in chat. Please do read up on the Visibility Graphics. Maybe there is a trick you can develop that will help you.... As far as I know, your limited if you want more than one pattern on the same surface in the same view, regardless of the depth in an elevation.

One other thing...I HAVE had issues where surrounding hatch made the "foreground" difficult to read. To resolve this, I simply used the "Linework" tool to make the boredering lines heavier and/or darker.

erland! you know i dont get out of the chat very often.... i get lost and confused but seriously I was thinking about duplicating that component like you suggested, but what do you do when you need to make another elevation that shows that wall and that wall is NOW in the foreground?

Overide Graphics in view? Select the walls that are further back and switch off the hatch pattern, or set it o halftone. One method of achieving this, there are others with more options to create multiple fading of walls as they recede.
