i know that there is an easy way to make the doors open 30 or 45 degrees. i've done it once and can't for the life of me remember how i did it. could someone please remind me how to make it right for my renderings. thank you

You need to build that into the family. Either two panels, one at 90 and one at 45, which have their visibility set to a y/n parameter switch or you have a panel that rotates using an angle parameter. The first process is easier for the novice family builder.

hub, and erl are both correct. i would recommend that you learn the angle parameter though if time permits. the more you know about families they better they work!
