Revit's use of curtain wall is very confusing. Sometime's it acts like a wall sometimes it doesn't. Anyway, I created a parametric sun shade using the wall hoted family template. Since I was trying to get the parameters right it took a long time. This sun shade is offset from a curtain wall. Now, when I load the family into my revit project, it won't host on my curtain wall. This is extremely frustrating. What can I do about this? I couldn't change the type to make it just generic. It seems I have to copy everything over to another family. How would I go about doing this efficiently? Would copying elements over still retain all of my parameters? Also, I tried following Mr. Spot's tutorial on this and my louvre/fin angle parameter seems to be broken. I'll attach my file, any help would be great! Thanks! -Dave

If you are in a rush to do this... you can "cheat" it. Just create a generic wall - just enough so you can use it to host your created sun shade family, if needed... change your generic wall material to glass-transparent to match your curtain wall panel. It's a lazy way to do it but i think it would work.

This is one of those..."I would have done this differently". We have found that unless you need to cut the host, don't use wall/floor/ceiling/roof based families. Instead use a face based. Too late for you now. Is there wall above or below your element? If so, then can that host your entity and just move its vertical location. You can use tricks like this if the host is still somehow in view.

I ran into this same issue. I am using a "curtain wall" for a toilet partition (I know there are other way...just testing to see if it would work) and I need to attach a piece of equipment to the partition wall. I know about wall hosted and face based families, but the face based family is weird to work with in relation to vertically place families. Is there a way to change the "reference" host face to a vertical one so I can model LIKE a wall hosted family?

James, I don't have any problems using face based on vertical or even upside down. Just build it on the template knowing that what is plan is the face of whatever. Now to place these face based objects... do it from a 3d view is easiest.

I hear what you are saying and I can also work with face-based families, but I am having to train others to create families and I am running into difficulty because I have to make sure they know the same thing. By the way, how to you handle the Visibility setting and symbolic lines for face based families. It seem a little weird to have to turn the visibility off for "Front/Back" when you need a "Plan view" symbolic.

For visibility, you just have to "translate" your references. Plan really is "front" for wall hosted elements. So symbollic lines placed in the plan will be in the plane the item is hostd on - so if walls - if placed in plan view of the family, they will be seen in model elevation. For anyone that hand drafted this thought process has never been an issue.
