I am trying to develop a site model for the first time. I have been modifying the toposurface and the resulting model look as shown in the attached image. The red material seems to  be the area that will be cut. I do not want this to show but I can not figure out how to turn it off. Any one have some thoughts?

It looks like you have two sites built. I would suggest trying to select one, delete it, and see what remains. Itmay also be easier to just start over. When building a site my suggestion is to set your four corners first, at 0'-0" (or whatever youraverage is) and then proceed to spot in all the high and low points. Finish the site model, and deselect everything. Under your Site tools you'll see that you have the optionof PAD. That will allow you to make a flat plane that your house sits on. It's a floor basically, but it does not adjust the contours of your site, just at the footprint of the house. When building your pad, draw your lines around the footprint of the house, and also any sidewalk or driveway you have. You can build as many pads as you need as long as they don't overlap.

Sorry it's long, but that should get you sorted out.

Did you create that topo by import a CAD file and create the site??? if yes, did you delete the cad file?

In the 3D view, select by crossing, go to "Filter" and check how many object you have there and what is it....

you say that you have been modifing the topo surface. So i assume that you were using the Graded Region Tool. if so you should have received a warning about moving the topo into eariler Phase before using this tool. It will be Demolished and a matching surface will be created in the current Phase. i suspect that you did not do and what you are seeing is the two topo surfaces in the current Phase. you should be able to move the original topo to an earlier Phase of just delete if you think you will have no need for it.

I had two topo surfaces as you expected. I did have them in different phases but I had not set up  the view properties so that the existing site was hidden.

Thanks for the help. It seems so simple when you look at it again in the morning. I was pulling my hair out with frustration at the end of a very long day yesterday.
