Currently working on a hospital, we need to do a power/lighting demolition plan, however we don't have a reflected ceiling plan showing the existing conditions. is there a way to place ceiling fixtures without an rcp?

I believe all the 'out of the box' revit ceiling light fixtures need to be hosted by a revit 'ceiling' object. (not 100% sure) This has nothing to do with the reflected ceiling plan view (RCP) which is just a view that is designed to show the ceiling. Why not just create a ceiling object and corrisponding RCP and put the lights on it? A bastardized way is to duplicate the regular floor plan, set the visibility up to look like a RCP and place some custom made floor or surface based light fixtures in that floor plan.

I ran into this same problem. What I did was create a reference plane, and then host the fixtures to that. It works.

The basic "Generic" ceiling that comes with Revit is all that you need. It really isn't a ceiling as such... if you look, it has no thickness - but it can have a finish if you want. I believe this was meant to be used as a susbstitute for "ceilings" where you have an exposed structure so that you have a ceiling to host ciling hosted objects.

I came across this problem before... what i did was... I created a in-place ceiling family (I had an exposed structure-sloping) I found out that in-place family was the best way to create a "fictitious" ceiling - small enough just to host a ceiling base light fixtures/chandelier. Then add a clear/transparent material so it won't show up if you want to render it. Hope that helps.
