I am wondering for a typical 2"x4" or 2"x 4 1/2" aluminum and glass window system; is it best to create your own Family or is there a good, modifiable Family suitable for using, making changes easy, etc...?

there are 3 components to curtain wall systems...the curtain grid (invisible lines determining the location of the grid) - mullions (the actuall mullion pieces) and panels (the objects between mullions) Panels can be glass, solid, whatever...including doors. Select the panel where you want your door (be sure to select the panel instead of the grid or mullion) and change it's type from System Panel or Glazed Panel to a curtain wall door type. Voila! You can change its size by changing the location of the curtain grid lines.

If you want to alter the actual panel, open the family file and change it - save and reload that family into your project. We have done this when say a door in a curtain wall has different sized stiles, and we wanted a pull handle to be on the door in the curtain wall....

Thanks to you guys ... great information - I am going to try it out. I also cant seem to trim a grid line - for creating different mullion work. Any thoughts on this ?

when you select a grid line, there will be a button at the top called Add or Remove Segments click it and then click the curtain grid segment you want to get rid of.
