okay - i will admit that i did a very quick search to see what had been said but wanted to cut to the chase -

revit will not allow forward or backward compatability

so does this also apply to families as well?

what a colossal waste of resources and time if true.

Yes this is correct.  For both families and projects you cannot save files back to a previous version.

Backwards compatibility will never be supported in Revit.  If you are using the latest version you don't have an issue.  Which is why Autodesk has a subscription program...

I get so sick of this argument and I'm sure I'm not alone...

Mr. Spot,

You missed that he said foward compatable...Revit IS forward compatable... that is, you can always open an older file and upgrade it.

Dead on Spot and yes WW as long as you have the latest release you can open older REVIT files and families.

.
.
People must understand that REVIT is not a 2d vector based program, word processor or spread sheet. It is sophisticated Building Information Modeling across multiple disciplines which involves in-depth analysis and system integration..
.
In my opinion 'backward' compatibility in the CAD world is a bad bad habit that has been accepted and entrenched from the DWG. It establishes a breading ground that caters to 'software pirates'. Not that I am making any accusations in this thread.
.
I believe a robust BIM CAD software cannot continue to move ahead and make improvements when the file format stays the same. Autodesk turned a blind eye to DWG pirates for many years in order to gain market share. That is a fact..
.
And YES, we are definitely in a storm right now because REVIT 2010 for the first time in its existence has rolled out a substandard product and it is causing a substantial slow down in upgrading. I cannot defend that. However I have faith that that it will change.
.
.
One of the many strengths and attractions of using REVIT has always been that 'everyone is on the same release' and I hope it stays that way. Autodesk used to force you to be on subscription until they were legally bound to remove that constraint (pun intended). I would have just as sooned let it be..
.
.
I know from personal experience over many years that trying to run an office and paying someone to constantly deal with different file formats back and forth is a $%#^ nightmare. . . . and THAT is a waste of time and money..
.
.
It's never pleasant trying to explain to the white haired company principals that you need another day because you have to deal with glitches from a file from 2-3 releases ago that contain old nested blocks and you need to start flipping files around and hope to God there's a lisp routine out there that helps (aka Bonus tools). .
.
.
Nope, I'll take a single file format any day of the week and be productive doing so : )

I think we just have to give these new users time to understand that this is a strength - not a weakness.  If they never get that, then that's their weakness.

Agreed, hense my detailed reply : )  It's a substancial culture change from traditional CAD. I had a post earlier where I made the statement "We must all band together like '300' (the movie) and fight off the evil forces of multiple file format !
