First off yes, i see there are lots of families there but I guess I saw families as been like a desk which I could edit, rather than just furniture perametres. Also when I try do download new families from the autodesk site (by that I mean like loadable families such as a range of desk designs) can I only get them in the rfa file format?

If you are trying here: http://seek.autodesk.com/ , you have several formats to download the files....

template files are just that... they're templates; blank slates with a few rules to save time. it sounds like you want to customize existing families. if so, then you are in fact looking for rfa files.
