Hi, I´m quite new to revit, and trying to teach myself in a bit of a vacuum... no one at the next desk to ask questions so it´s a bit of a struggle to get going with it. Anyway, I have a few problems that hopefully someone can help me resolve... 1. When making line based detail components the variety of line types is very limited, and the "line styles" window can´t be opened. I´m not trying to make anything complicated, just a thick dashed line... is this possible? 2. Another detail component question: Some of the components I´ve made won´t accept dimensions properly. Fo example, a skirting board component will only accept a dimension on one side, so I can´t dimension it´s width. Other components I´ve made don´t have this problem, but I don´t think I´ve done anything different in making them. 3. Keynote text for detail components: Is it possible to set a keynote to wrap onto a second line of text? Some of them are a little long and are running off page. Also when I place the keynotes to the right of a detail, they justify nicely to the left. However, its trickier when the notes are placed on the right of the detail. I would prefer them to justify to the right in this case, but I´m not sure this is possible... is it? Hopefully these are all obvious to someone! Thanks Colin

#1 - "Line based" - probably a bad term. Line based famiies are parametric. I think you just mean detail component. Either way, if the linetype you want is not available, define a new one. Settings - object styles. #2 - Not sure what you are saying. Dimensions placed in detail components are there only to define the detail. They don't show up when the item is placed. #3 - Keynote alignment and width is set in the keynote family. Using them like you are, you would need several different families or types. Most users use keynotes with a legend.

Thanks for that.. 1. That fixed it 2. I meant that I am having problems dimensioning to detail components after they have been inserted into the project and I´m working in a drafting view, dimensioning and annotating details... 3. Will check that out C

If you can't dimension to something in REVIT at first, try using your tab key to cycle through available ponits/edges/faces where your cursur is.

For dimensioning teh component, open the component family, place a reference plane where you need to dimension it. (Reference Planes in families serve as anchors for dimension lines). Load it back into the project and it should do teh trick.

thanks sagarkagathara, that´s fixed the second question alright. I´ve found also that some of the keynotes automatically wrap their text (the standard tag for room name seems to do this), so I should be able to figure that out too. In the meantime I´ve come across another issue - the orientation of fill patterns. I can see that fill patterns can be set to ¨orient to view¨or ¨aligh with element¨. However, whichever I choose, my fill patterns do no rotate when I rotate a filled region. Is there something else I should be doing? C

"whichever I choose, my fill patterns do no rotate when I rotate a filled region. Is there something else I should be doing?" - in your Filled Region you must choose Model patterns if you want to rotate them, that filled region have a Drafting pattern i'm sure....

Drafting fill patterns can be aligned with the view or element in the pattern properties, but model patterns cannot. Model patterns can be rotated or aligned as Typhoon suggests by rotating or aligning one of the lines (click with tab to find it).

@tim41 - I think I´m on the right track using a drafting pattern... To explain further, I´m drawing a detail component which shows some plywood. I want the plywood full pattern to always be aligned with the board. The fill pattern (a drafting pattern) is set to "align with element" both in the component family and in the project. When I import the detail component and rotate it, the fill pattern down not rotate

If you're using it in a 2d detail as a fill region then it will not rotate - in your case it would appear that the pattern could align to the element, but the boundary could be arbitary without any parallel lines. The align with element is for model components, such as walls. If you change this to a model pattern you can rotate it with the detail.

thanks, I should ba able to sort something out. In the meantime, came across something else that I can´t figure out in drafting view... trimming an elliptical line. I have an eliptical vault in a roof in the project I´m drawing up, so a lot of elipses in section. They don´t seem so easy to work with in Revit. Any ideas? C

split the ellipse - then trim.

@WWHub - I´ve tried splitting it, but Revit won´t let me do it. I´ve tried scrolling through all the elements but can´t make the split commant operate on the ellipse.

I can and just did....So are you sure you didn't? Works on fun or partial ellipses.

@WWHub - Thing I´ve figured out the problem... the line I´m looking at is a offset copy of the original ellipse, so not a pure ellipse. It seems to be a line type that´s immune to editing.
