Hi. New here, hopefully someone can shed a little light on this. I'm working with a model that contains several instances of a linked file that has three design options defined. Getting them to display the design options I want is no problem except that what i want to do eventually is to bind the instances to the project file. When I do that, the models revert to the primary Design Option, and there doesn't seem to be any way around it. The linked objects are converted to groups which appear on the Browser, and have the two "unused" Design Option contents as children, but I can't figure out if it's possible to get the groups to display the alternate layouts. In fact, I can't figure out why these things are shown in the browser since there doesn't seem to be any way to do anything with them. I found a procedure in the help file that seems to describe how to do this, but can't get it to work. Am I missing something, or is it just not possible? thanks to anyone who can help. Steve Fillipp

If you want design options to show these alternatives, I think it is logical that you will have to "rebuild" them. Simply create the new option and place the group in that option. Then set up you VG's in views as appropriate.

Ok, thanks. I kind of figured that's what I'd end up doing, but being relatively new to Revit I wondered if there was something I was overlooking. I'm working with a third party's files and just figured they wouldn't have done it this way if there wasn't some way to use the D.O.'s in the end result. Sounds like a wish-list item - when you bind an object that has design options, it would be nice if Revit gave you the option to choose which one to use. Appreciate the quick response. Steve

Well ... my answer was not from experience. I have not used bind on a model with design options so I would have to test it but I just can't see how REVIT could have bound in the design options. You taught me something because I did not realize it would create groups from the options. My only concern for inserting the groups is their origins and how to assure that they are placed correctly. .... This would really get tricky if they are multi-level groups.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear about what the groups consisted of. It creates a group from the linked file, but it reverts back to the primary option when it does it no matter what the view setting is when you do that. The group has a couple of attached detail groups or something below it that have the same names as the unused design options, but I can't seem to do anything with them. I feel better about my ignorance on the subject knowing that there's not some obvious thing I'm missing. SF
