It could work but there would be a good amount of initial investigating, and process development involved. You have to think about how it gets scheduled, how you want to "see" the model, etc. Its possible and it can do a very good job, if you put forth the initial effort.

There is a user named mflure who frequents the chat room. He's a nice dude who is really keen on Revit families and has been playing with some interesting stuff. Stop by RC chat from time to time to see if he's in and give him a shout.

If each part is a seperate family, then yes you can but I would probably assemble it at the project level.

what would this feature be called? If i make parametric cabinets with standard parts, gables , door, etc i would have to somehow break them up into individual family before i can do this?
thanks

In order for component families to schedule in a project, they have to be shared families that are nested in a host family or directly loaded into a project. You can't schedule from a family. Individual extrusions in a family will not schedule so that is why every nut, bolt, screw, piece of wood would have to be a seperate family if you want to schedule them.
If you are building these families for others to use in their projects - DON'T! We don't need families that have as many shared families as you are proposing. If this is just for your use, then your OK.
