So I created some in place families in our project to show some equipment like high density storage files, copiers, plotters, etc. I created them all with model lines in our master floor plan, and decided to do it as a family instead of a model group so that I could tag the equipment for our equipment schedule. Thing is, even though they were created with model lines, they only show up on the master floor plan and not the dependent views. The equipment tags show up, but not the family. I thought maybe that I drew them with symbolic lines accidentally, causing it to only show up in that particular view, but that isn’t the case, they are all model lines. I didn't want to have to create actual families for these items since they are specific to this project, especially the high density storage files. If I actually create 3D elements in the in-place family, then they show up, but I really don't need them to be 3D. Is there something I’m missing? Is there a better way to go about this? Thanks for you help!

This is part of the Revit learning curve. If you don't want them as 3D, create them as 2D families.

I don't know what happen with you but model lines are supposed to appear on any view. Can you make another dependent view and see if you will have the same problem? If not, check the visibility settings of your previous view. If yes, that's weird.

WW- What do you mean by creating a 2D family? I didn't see that option when creating an in-place family. Could you explain a little more? I am currently working my way through a BIG learning curve, so any information you could pass on would be great! Thanks.

If I create a new dependent view from the master floor plan, then the families show up. I didn't have any filters on or categories turned off in the first dependent view. The only difference seems to be that the families were created in the master floor plan after the dependent view was created. Can't quite figure out why it would matter if I created the family before or after the dependent view. So strange.

SaVE YOUR FILE. This is what you do. Save the newly created dependent view as a view template and apply that template to your previous dependent view. If the rest of the model family lines appear, then you have some hidden setting on that view.

sloman, When I wrote "create them as 2D families", I meant in the family editor, not in place. You wrote that you were creating "high density storage files, copiers, plotters, etc.", why create those in place ? Create them as 2D in the family editor and you will have them for other projects.

I was creating them in place because they aren't something we would probably use for other projects. The high density storage units are just simply blocked in to show the size and location of the rails, this would change on a project to project basis. In fact, we have two in this project alone and they are both different. Same for the printers and copiers. They are specific items that the owner already has that we need to list in the equipment schedule and show their placement for electrical purposes, but I didn't need to detail them, so they are just appropriately sized boxes to show placement. I could build them parametrically so that they may be used for future projects, but that is more time than I wanted to spend on them. It sounded like an in-place family was the fastest, easiest way to go about creating these so that I could tag them. Unfortunately they are causing me more grief that I would like.

I think your original problem was how to show an in-place family on any dependent view. So, as I said, you created a new in-place family on the main view using model lines, then made a dependent view from that and your in-place you just made showed up. If your previous family is just simple, create a new one on your master view and see if they appear on your previously dependent views you created. If not, then you did alter some of the visibility settings.

Sorry about the double post...not quite sure how I managed that. mhans - I did try making new in-place families in the master and they wouldn't show in the dependents either. It was definitely something to do with the visability settings, because when I created a new dependent view, then they would show up. It was strange because all three dependent views that were originally created had the same problem and I couldn't find anything in the visability settings that would have caused it. I was hoping that someone would have had a similar situation and found where their settings went awry and could clue me in...cause I was not finding anything. I did just end up deleting the previous dependent views and recreating them, and everything seems to be in fine working order now. Thanks for the help!
