I have a project with 2 different buildings. I've built each building in a separate file. The sheets will be submitted all as one set. I would like to be able to throw a view of a building section from one model to the other and place it on a sheet. Is there a way to do this? I've tried inserting from file, but that only allows you to insert drafting views and sheets. for some reason the sheet with my building section on it does not show up in this list of importable views. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In the file you want to have the view on the sheet, create a new section in the desired location (one that matches the location of the section in the other file). Then go to Visibility/Graphics & Overrides Navigate to you Linked Tab You'll see the linked building file in there, click in the options, Change it to "By Linked View" then select the section you wish it to look the same as. Okay out of dialog boxes. Done. This enables you the ability to display all the tags, dimensions etc that are in the other file that you can't tag in this file. HTH.

so, i have to link the entire file? seems like an excessive amount of memory to bring into the project for only one view on one sheet.

export the section to a dwg format that link it into a drafting view of the desired project

Right click on the view in the browser and save it to a new file. You can then import just that view.

I don't have that option when I right click. It's grayed out.

hunterfloyd, Go ahead and link it. A link is not an import and your file size will not be increased significantly. Much easier than export and importing a CAD file.

Linking a file gives no overhead to the file size (it is essentially the same as an xref). It might take a little longer to load up purely because its opening 2 files instead of 1... This method keeps everything automated and "smart". If changes occur down the track you won't have to worry about redoing this multiple times. We do keynoting in the building files themselves. The combined/site file generally will only have overall/site plans & elevations with a couple of linked views.

I just did a test project link with keynotes becuase I swore in the past when I had linked projects in one file, when I would switch my VG to my linked view my keynote tag would show up but it would be empty. I am curious what I had done wrong on that project to have them show blank. curse now that I see that work I am very happy.
